British Values and SMSC

 British Values

Every week, we use the resource Picture News to support our teaching of British Values and Protected Characteristics.

This helpful resource, exposes our children to a range of current issues including political, religious, cultural, environmental, social, moral, spiritual. It helps to make British Values relevant and meaningful and develop links between personal, school and community values.

Picture News also encourages children to demonstrate respect and tolerance. Children can often explain how they should behave or what they should say but what better way to teach respect than if they are discussing something they actually care about?

Children can personally respond to the weekly news article through our interactive Reflection Space. For Picture News Coverage please click on the links below.

Every academic year we also hold a British Values Day, where each class focus on one particular value and explore it together.

The day culminates in an assembly where each class have the opportunity to share their learning and thoughts about the value.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural)

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education and is part of the National Curriculum.

AtBroad Chalke Primary School, our aim is to inspire all our pupils to love learning and to be socially and morally responsible citizens of the world. Our purpose is to nurture the growth of the whole child - academically, socially and emotionally. We embrace the fact that every child is unique, and our ethos is warm, supportive and family friendly, ensuring the best possible environment for all children to reach their potential

Christian values – are embedded in our school SMSC education through PSHE lessons, worship and learning experiences that occur in the everyday life of the school.

Our definition of SMSC

Spiritual: Explore beliefs and experiences; respect values; discover oneself and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect meaningfully on their own actions and the actions of others.

Moral: Recognise right and wrong; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social: Use social skills in different contexts; work well with others; resolve conflicts; understand how communities work.

Cultural: Appreciate cultural influences; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Spirituality at Broad Chalke

At Broad Chalke we deeply care about our pupils and their development academically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. We aim to create an environment that will nurture and support this development.

We believe spirituality should influence all areas of education and life. Therefore, we ensure that throughout the curriculum there are moments to pause, reflect and opportunities for rich deep thinking that contribute to pupils’ personal spiritual development.

Spiritual development relates to fundamental questions about the meaning and purpose of life which affect everyone and is not dependent on a religious affiliation.

As a church school, we are guided by the Christian faith and Christian values which Christians hold dear. However, we truly welcome all and we openly encourage children to reflect in the way that suits them best, enabling them to participate in an ongoing process of spiritual realisation and to flourish in a way that will help them find peace, comfort, and strength throughout life's ever-changing journey.

At Broad Chalke we use the imagery of Candles, Windows, Mirrors and Doors to support spirituality.

Candles

A moment to pause

A moment to pray

A moment of silence

Windows

Discovering more

Learning about life and all its fullness

Mirrors

Doors

Moving onto a new path and using this learning

Every day, pupils have a 'time to think' activity which helps them to explore big thinking. This takes place in every classroom after lunch. The themes are linked to Collective Worship, Picture News  or something topical e.g. linked to a visit/visitor to school. Examples of our 'time to think' slides can be seen below.

As part of our curriculum offer we also ensure there are planned opportunities for spirituality and spiritual development. See document below. As a school we also hold a Spirituality Day in the summer.
